Blow Torches Info

A hot topic!

A blow torch - sometimes called a blowtorch or blowlamp - is a type of liquid or gas burning tool used for heating items. Blow torches produce a much larger but softer flame than, say, an oxyacetylene torch and are therefore generally used for low temperature applications such as soldering electrical joints, brazing, roof tar melting, or pre-heating castings before a weld is made. Domestic applications also include cooking when a rapid heat application is required.

Blow torches cannot be used for welding but do find suitable use in a number of applications because they are a simple source of heat often use a disposable gas canister meaning they can be hand held, very cheap and highly portable. Typically they are fuelled by LPG which is also very cheap in comparison to alternatives like acetylene and oxygen.

Technically a blowtorch must burn a liquid fuel by using a vaporizer. In technical or trade usage, modern torches are rarely called blowtorches now because they are more commonly referred to by the type of fuel they consume. Examples are a propane torch, acetylene air torch or oxyacetylene torch. Some torches are also named after their intended use such as cutting torch and plumbers torch.
